Ouch!

10 unearned runs!  Defense was supposed to be one of the Halo's strong points, but Sunday's game against theError.jpg Yanks shows what happens when holes in the defense appear.  The 10 unearned runs given up to the Bombers tied a franchise record set May 31, 1978 against the White Sox.  Not the type of records the Angels are looking to break (or tie).  After losing Sunday, the Angels finished their east coast swing with a 7-3 record.  Not bad if you look at the "big picture", but definitely a let down after heading into New York at 5-1.  In years past a split at Yankee stadium would be acceptable, but this year's team is probably the strongest ever and the two loses could have...and should have been Angel wins.  Wait, I suppose they were never really in Saturday's game against Mussina, so taking 3 of 4 would be more realistic.

Some notes:

  • The Angels have committed 33 errors in their last 38 games.  Previously, the Angels' fielders had committed only 32 errors in their first 73 games.
  • Who sucks?  Hint:  His name rhymes with "Shmusmatthews"
  • Mark Teixeira hit his first home run as an Angel...and it was a grand slam.  Teix had just one RBI and had stranded 11 runners (including Sunday's game) since joining the Angels last Wednesday.
  • Reggie Willits didn't have an official at-bat Sunday.  He walked all 4 plate appearances which must have caused Angels' hitting coach Mickey Hatcher to pull out some of his hair.  Hatcher follows the Dusty Baker mantra of taking your hacks; walks are over-rated and only clog the bases.  I hope Hatcher's head is bald by the end of the year, taking pitches and walks are a good thing.
  • The Angels still have the best record in the majors at 69-42.
